The lost job

Why the customer called the other guy

Same work. Same price. He never saw your name. Here is exactly where it goes, in the three places it happens, with the numbers behind each one.

01

He typed two words and never scrolled

He searched, glanced at the top of the map, and called the one that looked like the safe choice. He did not compare craftsmanship. He compared a number, a date, and whether anyone had bothered to reply.

That is a 264 review head start, and it is the whole reason he called them first.

You cannot answer from a ladder

Nobody leaves a voicemail anymore. They hang up and call the next name on the list. Here is the same Tuesday afternoon, twice.

Today
  1. 2:14Homeowner calls. You cannot pick up.
  2. 2:14No answer. No voicemail left.
  3. 2:17He calls the next company on the list.
  4. 2:22That one books the job. You never knew he called.
With this running
  1. 2:14Homeowner calls. You still cannot pick up.
  2. 2:14He gets a text back: sorry we missed you, what do you need?
  3. 2:16He texts a photo of the job.
  4. 2:18Your phone buzzes with his number and what he needs.
  5. 2:25You text him back from the truck. Estimate booked.

An old study of web leads found the odds of qualifying one fell twenty one fold when follow up slipped from five minutes to thirty. It was not contractors and it was not missed calls, so treat the direction as the point rather than the number. The gap in the timeline above is three minutes.

03

The thing he checks last, and decides on

He is not reading all of them. He looks at how many, how recent, and whether the owner ever replied. A quiet review page reads as a quiet business.

47%

will not use a business with fewer than twenty reviews. Only nine percent will consider one with five or fewer.

68%

now rule out anything under four stars, up from fifty five percent a year earlier. Nearly a third will only call 4.5 and above.

After every job we text your customer one link. Every one of them can post publicly, and every one of them can reach you privately in the same tap. You hear about the bad job that afternoon instead of reading it on Google a week later.

04

Nearly half of them now ask AI who to call

Last year six people in a hundred did that. This year it is forty five. Not a prediction, a survey, and it moved that far in twelve months.

45%

used ChatGPT, Gemini or a similar tool to find a local business in the past year, against 6% the year before. Among 30 to 44 year olds it is 64%.

What it reads before it answers

  • Your Google listing: services, hours, service area, photos
  • Your reviews, how many and how recent
  • Whether your site says plainly what you do and which towns you cover

Why most contractors are invisible to it

  • It cannot recommend what it cannot read
  • A thin listing and a site that never names your towns give it nothing to go on
  • There is no ad to buy your way out of this one

Clean, consistent information gives these tools something to read. It does not buy you a recommendation, and anyone selling you one is guessing.

05

Three places you were losing him. I fix all three.

He can find you

A real site built for your trade and your towns, plus your Google listing filled out properly: every service, real job photos, correct hours, service area, review link. That is what gives Google something accurate to rank. Distance and an entrenched competitor can still keep you out of the top three, and I will not pretend otherwise.

He can reach you

Calls, quote forms and website chat hit your phone the second they happen. Miss one and he gets a text back before he dials anyone else.

He does not slip away

Quiet quote requests get nudged automatically and stop the moment he replies or books. Most leads are busy, not gone.

Each one feeds the next. Reviews lift where you show up. Showing up brings calls. Answered calls become jobs. Jobs become reviews.

You already do the work. This decides who gets asked.
