Customers are asking ChatGPT who to hire. What that means for you.

A growing slice of your market skips Google entirely. Being findable there is not magic, it is housekeeping.

Nearly half of consumers say they used an AI tool to find or vet a local business this year. That number was single digits a year earlier. You do not need to care about the technology. You need to care that a chunk of your future customers are asking a chat window who to call.

Here is the honest version of how that works: the AI tools read the same public information Google reads. Your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your listings. When that information is complete, consistent, and current, the tools can find you and recommend you. When it is thin or contradictory, you simply do not exist in the answer.

Anyone selling you a secret AI ranking trick is selling smoke. There is no secret. There is structure: services written out clearly, service areas named, reviews steady and answered, the same business name and number everywhere, real photos with real dates.

That is boring. It is also the exact same work that helps you in regular Google search and the map pack, which is where most customers still are. You are not betting on a trend. You are doing the housekeeping that pays on every channel at once.

The trades that get this right in the next couple of years get a quiet head start: they become the name the chat window mentions while their competitors are still asking their nephew what ChatGPT is.
